Yost
(1803 - 1865) Adam Yost4 (Joseph3, Henry2, Johann Conrad1) was born 10 December 1803 at Limerick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Kepler) Yost. His birth is recorded in ______________ County birth records, v. ___, no. ___. He died 15 July 1865, age 61, of ___________ at Honeybrook Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The funeral was held _____________________, at _________________ Church, _______, and he is buried in Honeybrook Cemetery at ________. His death is recorded in __________________ County death records, v. ____, no. _____, and obituaries were published in _________________________. He married Mary Yocum before 1829 _____ _______ _______, at ___________________ Church, _______________, ______________ County, Pennsylvania. Rev. _________________ presided. Witnesses were __________________ and ________________. The marriage is recorded in the marriage register of __________ Church, _______________ Street, _______________. See also ______________ County marriage records, v. ___, no. ________. Mary Yocum was born 12 August 1805 at ______________, ___________ County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Peter (?) and Eleanor (?) (Andrew ?) Yocum. Her birth is recorded in ____________ County birth records, v. ___, p. ___. She died 16 February 1896, age 90, (1894?) of _______________, at _____________, ______________ County, ___________. The funeral was held _____________________, at _________________ Church, __________, and she is buried in Honeybrook Cemetery at ____________. Her death is recorded in _____ County death records, v. ____, p. _____, and obituaries were published in ___________________________________. Adam and Mary (Yocum) Yost are believed to have had about nine children, but some of these died in infancy, and their names are unknown. Sometime between 1820 and 1829, Adam's parents moved from Limerick Township of Montgomery County to Salisbury Township of Lancaster County. We cannot be certain of the exact year, but it was probably in 1825 or thereafter. Neither they nor any of their children are listed in the Salisbury Township tax assessment records until 1829. Perhaps they owned nothing that was taxable. In 1829, Adam was assessed 12____ for a cow. He was listed as a weaver and an inmate. The designation “inmate” indicates he rented the house in which he lived. In 1830, Adam Yost, weaver, and an inmate was again assessed 12___ for a cow. The 1831 tax records for this township are missing. In 1832 and 1833, Adam Yost was not listed in the tax records, but his father was. The 1834 tax records for this township are missing. In 1835, Adam Yost, weaver, was listed as an inmate and assessed 12___ for a cow. This is the last year Adam was taxed in Salisbury Township. However, his father was taxed in 1838 and was listed in the 1840 Federal Census of the township. By 1840, Adam had moved to Honeybrook Township of Chester County. According to the 1840 Federal Census, his household contained four males and three females, as follows:
According to this census, one person in the household was engaged in manufacturing. Thus, Adam was apparently still practicing his trade as a weaver. See National Archives original, v. 8, p. 18. According to Chester County land records, Adam Yost acquired property in 1840, 1855 and 1865. See deed book T, v. 4, p. 407, book Y, v. 5, p. 554, and book R, v. 6, p. 479. According to the 1850 Federal Census, Adam Yost was a farmer in Honeybrook Township. His son, Amzi, was a plasterer and his brother, Joseph, was a laborer. The listing is as follows:
*See National Archives original, v. 19, p. 393B. By the time of his death, Adam had acquired real estate which brought $2,694 at the court-ordered sale. See Chester County probate file no. 15096. Beynard Yost was appointed administrator. A belated, two-line obituary in the Valley Record of 3 November 1865 noted Adam's death: "On the 15th of July, in Honeybrook, Adam Yost in the 63rd year of his age." However, if Adam Yost was born in December 1803, he would have been in his 62nd year. A typographical error? Unless otherwise noted, all dates in this biography are based on a bible record in the possession of ___________. The bible was published at ____________ in ______. The Honeybrook Cemetery is located at the corner of Water and Chestnut Streets. The gravestones of Adam, his wife, and their spinster, daughter, are inscribed: Adam Yost Mary Yost Mary A.
