Recorded April 15th A.D. 1871.

NOTE:
Triennial Assessment of Limerick Township, Montgomery County, Pa., in 1810 shows both Conrad Yost and Joseph Yost (brothers??) each own 41 acres and dwelling and that each has "2 acres land bought of Owen Evans", bringing the total of each to 43 acres. Evidently, Joseph Yost rented part of the four acres Conrad bought.

Conrad and Martha (_______) Yost are believed to have had about two children:

Daughter Yost
Robert Yost

Joseph Yost (c1778 - 184?)
Elizabeth Kepler (1779 - 184?)

Joseph3 Yost (Henry2, Johann Conrad1) was born ____ _________ c1778 at Limerick Township, Montgomery County, (then Philadelphia County), Pennsylvania, the son of Henry and Susanna (Kieler) Yost. His birth date is unknown for certain. Since his name first appears in the Limerick Township tax assessments in 1799, presumably when he attained the age of 21, he was probably born about 1778. Since the birth and baptism of his older sister, Maria Elisabeth, is recorded in the register of Augustus Evangelical Lutheran Church at Trappe, Upper Providence Township, his probably was also. Unfortunately, the records of that church for the years 1777 to 1812 have been lost.

He evidently died between 1840 and 1850, age __, of ___________ at Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, since his name appears in the 1840 Census but not the 1850 Census. According to Dr. Albert H. Gerberich, John Ellsworth Yost of Parkesburg told him that his great-grandfather, Joseph Yost, was buried in the churchyard of Bangor Welsh Episcopalian Church at Churchtown, Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County. If so, his grave is no longer marked.

According to the records of Falkner Swamp Reformed Church, New Hanover Township, Montgomery County, Joseph Yost married Elizabeth Kepler 18 November 1798. Rev. Frederick Dellicker officiated. The Historical Society of the Evangelical and Reformed Church at Lancaster, Pennsylvania has a manuscript copy of William J. Hinke's translation of these records. See p 163. The marriage records of that church have also been published in Pennsylvania Archives, 2nd series, v 8, pp. 607–608.

Elizabeth Kepler was born 20 June 1779 at ______________ Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Heinrich and Anna Maria (Brandt) Kepler. According to the records of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Pottstown, Montgomery County, she was baptized 23 September 1781. Her sponsors were Cassimer Frane and his wife, Margareta. This record also gives the date of her birth and her parent's names. She died after 1840, but we do not know where or where she is buried.

On the basis of occupation tax assessments, Joseph Yost was a weaver, as were his father Henry and grandfather, Johann Conrad. Joseph Yost's name first appears in the Limerick Township tax records in 1799, when he was assessed an occupation tax of 72___. He evidently was living with his parents for he paid no other taxes. His father was assessed for 120 acres and dwelling, three horses, four cows, and a tax of 80____ as a weaver.

In 1800, Joseph Yost was assessed an occupation tax of 73____. The notation "single man" next to his name is crossed out. This notation, incidentally, was not made in the 1799 tax assessment record. However, he is not listed as head of a household in the 1800 Census of Pennsylvania, probably because he and his wife were living with Henry Yost.

In 1801, he was assessed for one cow and his occupation.

In 1802, he was assessed for one cow and his occupation, which is listed as weaver.

In 1803, he was assessed for one cattle and his occupation as weaver.

In 1804, he was assessed 63___ for one cattle and his occupation as weaver.

In 1805, he was assessed a tax of $1.04 for three acres and dwelling, one cow, and his occupation. This was probably rented property since there is no evidence in Montgomery County deed books that he ever bought any land.

In 1806, he was assessed a tax of $2.97 for 81 acres and dwelling, three acres and dwelling, two cattle, and his occupation. The 81 acres was evidently the same land purchased 8 May 1806 by his father from Frederick Grimley, since his father was not assessed for this land.

In 1807, Joseph Yost was assessed a tax of $3.02 for 84 acres and dwelling, a horse, two cattle, and his occupation.

In 1808, he was assessed a tax of $4.11 for 83 acres and dwelling, a horse, two cows, and his occupation.

In 1809, Henry Yost apparently divided the 82 acres he purchased in 1806 and rented 41 acres to his son, Conrad, and 41 acres to Joseph. Joseph Yost's assessment for that year was $2.07 for 41 acres and dwelling, a cow, and his occupation as weaver. Conrad Yoast (sic) was assessed $2.77 for 41 acres and dwelling, a horse, a cow, and his occupation, which is listed as weaver.

In the 1810 Census of Pennsylvania, Joseph Yost, his brothers, Samuel and Conrad, and their father, Henry, are listed in Limerick Township, with the following persons in their households:

HENRY JOSEPH SAMUEL CONRAD
AGE M F M F M F M F
45 & Up 2 1 - - - - - -

0 to 10 - - 3 2 2 1 6 -

*See National Archives Microcopy M-252, roll 52, p. 1124.

In 1810, Joseph Yost was assessed $2.37 for "two acres bought of Owen Evans," 41 acres and dwelling, a horse, two cows, a dog, and his occupation as weaver. Conrad Yost was assessed $2.48 for "two acres bought of Owen Evans," 41 acres and dwelling, a horse, two cows, a dog, and his occupation as weaver. However, it appears from the deed book records that the "two acres bought of Owen Evans" on which Joseph Yost paid taxes were actually owned by his brother, Conrad, and merely rented from him by Joseph. On 15 August 1810, Conrad Yost purchased four acres of land from Owen Evans and his wife, Rachel, for £100. The land is described as situate in Limerick Township and bordered by lands of the late John Hollebush, Henry Hollabush, Henry Kendall, Joseph Britton, Owen Evans, and Peter Sauer. The deed was recorded 15 April 1871 in Montgomery County Deed Book 188, pp. 117–119—61 years after it was purchased!

Unfortunately, the tax assessment records for Limerick Township for the years 1811 through 1829 are missing.

In the 1820 Census of Pennsylvania, Joseph Yoast (sic) is listed in Limerick Township with the following persons in his household:

Between 1820 and 1830, Joseph Yost moved to Salisburynnn Township of Lancaster County. There is an interesting story connected with this migration. In April 1935, the following inquiry from Dr. Albert H. Gerberich, then a professor at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was published in a periodical called The Perkiomen Region.

 Yost Ancestry

"I have a genealogical problem that originates in your territory, and if you can do so I should be glad to have you print a statement regarding it, as some of your readers may be able to help me complete the line.

"Joseph Yost, who lived somewhere east of Royersford, lost money by going someone's bond about the beginning of the last century, gave up his property in Montgomery County and moved over to the vicinity of Churchtown, Lancaster County, and started life anew.

"Two of his sons, Joseph and Clifford, remained there with him, and I have a record of all of Clifford's descendants. There were other children who stayed in Montgomery County. I should like to know their names and learn who the parents of Joseph Yost were."

See The Perkiomen Region, Pennsburg, Pa: Historical and Natural Science Society of Perkiomen Region, v. 13, no. 22, p. 122. Dr. Gerberich told me that the source of this information was John Ellsworth Yost, a great-grandson of Joseph Yost.

Since there is no evidence that Joseph Yost ever actually owned any land in Montgomery County, the story may have had its genesis in what appears to be an entirely different set of facts involving some land once occupied by him.

On 8 May 1806, Joseph's father, Henry, purchased three contiguous parcels of land aggregating 82 acres and 67½ perches from Frederick Grimley and Michael Ickes, administrators of the estate of John Grimley. Joseph Yost evidently rented this land from his father for he paid taxes of it from 1806 to 1808. In 1809, Henry Yost apparently divided it between his sons, Joseph and Conrad, for each was assessed on 41 acres beginning that year.

On 27 March 1812, Henry Yost gave a mortgage on 74 acres and 20 perches of this land to Frederick Grimley "for the better securing the payment thereof" of a "certain obligation...bearing date the twenty seventh day of March one thousand eight hundred & ten...Violation being thereunto had...." There is no evidence that this mortgage was ever released; yet this same tract was included in another mortgage by Henry Yost to Valentine Schelkop on 27 May 1819 to secure a debt of $400. See Montgomery County Mortgage Book 10, pp. 665–666.

On 15 May 1823, Henry Yost, widower, sold his son Samuel the three tracts of land aggregating 82 acres and 67½ perches which he had purchased on 8 May 1806. The deed was subject to two liens: a dower due the widow of John Grimley, the accrued interest on which was to be paid to her during her lifetime and at her death the principal was to be paid to John Grimley's children; and a mortgage due the heirs of Abraham Schelkop. See Montgomery County Deed Book 39, pp. 238–239.

In January 1825, Frederick Grimley foreclosed on the 74-acre, 20-perch tract. As a result of this foreclosure, Philip Boyer, high-sheriff of Montgomery County, sold the land to John Reifsnyder for $706. Perhaps Joseph Yost was still a tenant on this land when it was sold by the sheriff. This would explain the basis of the story cited above, but it does not explain why he moved to Lancaster County.

If Joseph Yost or any of his sons migrated to Salisbury Township of Lancaster County prior to 1829, they were not listed in the tax assessment records, but that may be because they owned nothing that was taxable. The first evidence of Joseph's presence in Salisbury Township is the census report of 1830 showing the following persons in his household:

AGE MALES FEMALES
60 to 70 1 -
50 to 60 - 1
40 to 50 - -
30 to 40 - -
20 to 30 3 1
15 to 20 2 1
10 to 15 1 1
5 to 10 - -
0 to 5 - -

*See National Archives Microcopy M-19, roll 153, p. 259.

However, his oldest son, Adam, who would have been 26 at the time, was listed in the township's tax records for 1829 as a weaver and an inmate. The designation "inmate" indicates he rented the house in which he lived. Adam was assessed 12_____ for a cow.

In 1830, Adam Yost, weaver and an inmate, was again assessed 12___ for a cow. Normally, the head of a household was listed in the tax records and census reports, but in this case Adam was not listed as a head of household by the census taker, and Joseph was not listed in the tax records.

The 1831 tax records for this township are missing.

In 1832, 1833, and 1834, Joseph Yost, weaver, was listed in the Salisbury Township tax records as an inmate. He was assessed 25 for four cattle. However, Adam was not listed in the tax records.

The 1834 tax records of this township are missing.

In 1835, Adam Yost, weaver, was listed as an inmate and assessed 12___ for a cow. However, Joseph Yost was not listed in the tax records.

The 1836 tax records of this township are missing.

In 1837, Joseph Yost, weaver, was listed as an inmate and assessed 18¾_____ for a horse and a cow. Adam Yost was not listed in the tax records.

The 1838 tax records of this township are missing.

Neither Joseph nor Adam are listed in the Salisbury Township tax records for 1839 or subsequent years.

However, in the 1840 Census, Joseph Yost is listed in Salisbury Township with the following persons in his household:

AGE MALES FEMALES
60 to 70 1 1
50 to 60 - 1
40 to 50 - 1
30 to 40 2 -
20 to 30 2 -
15 to 20 - -
10 to 15 1 -
5 to 10 - -
0 to 5 - -

*See National Archives Microcopy T-5, roll 146, p. 308.

Joseph apparently died between 1840 and 1850 for he is not listed in the 1850 Census of Lancaster County. His wife may be the same Elizabeth Yhost, age 73, listed in East Caln Township in the 1850 Census of Chester County. Living with her were George Yhost, age 26, a plasterer, and Susannah Zell, age 15. See National Archives Original, v. 19, p. 240R.

Joseph and Elizabeth (Kepler) Yost had nine known children:

Adam Yost = Mary Yocum
Sarah Yost
Henry Yost
Eliza Yost = Daniel Miller
Joseph Yost
Clifford Yost = Elizabeth Silknitter
William Yost = Jane Morrison
Mary Yost = John G_________ Whitaker
