Generation No. 1

1.Michael1 Hubing was born 1777 at, probably, Dalheim (a small municipality about eight miles southeast of the capitol city of Luxembourg) in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. Michael Hubing died 04 May 1856, age about 79 years, at, probably, Town of Belguim, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. His death is not recorded in Ozaukee County death records.  He was buried at St. Mary's cemetery at Lake Church, Town of Belguim.  He married Margaret ____________. She was born about 1787 at, perhaps, Dalheim. Margaret died 23 July 1861, age about 73 years, at Town of Belguim, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. Her death is not recorded in Ozaukee County death records.  She was buried, probably, at St. Mary's cemetery at Lake Church, Town of Belguim.

Michael Hubing was 70 years old when he and his wife Margaret accompanied three of their sons, Nicolas, Anton and Michael, to the United States in about 1848. When they migrated to this country, Anton was married and had a daughter, Mary, born in Luxembourg about 1845. The Hubings settled on a farm in Town of Belgium. Michael and Margaret Hubing may have had other children who stayed in Luxembourg or migrated elsewhere.

When the 1850 Wisconsin census was taken, the enumerator listed Michael Hubing's household as follows:

Age Sex Occupation
Michael Hubing 73 M Farmer
Margt  63 F
Nicholas 32 M Farmer
Anthony 30 M Farmer
Michael 28 M Farmer
Celia 31 F
Mary 5 F
Michael 3 M
Catherine 1 F

According to this census record, Michael's farm was worth $300. Wisconsin is listed as the birthplace of Michael and Catherine, the two youngest children of Anton and his wife Cecelia; and Germany is listed as the birthplace of all the other persons in the household. This no doubt reflected the fact that Luxembourg was then a member of the German Confederation; and although governed by the King of the Netherlands, was garrisoned by Prussia. See National Archives original, v 8, pp 156-157.

Michael Hubing's gravestone is inscribed:

Michael Hubing
Geb. 1777
Gest. D. 4 Mai 1856
Napoleons Diener

Michael Hubing probably served as a soldier in Napoleon's army, because the inscription "Napoleons Diener," which means "helper," is on his gravestone.

The burial records of St. Mary's cemetery indicate that Margaret Hubing is buried there. Her son Anton Hubing's obituary remarks that his parents are buried in St. Mary's cemetery. However, we have not located her gravestone. We assume she is buried next to Michael and that the gravestone has disappeared.

Children of Michael and Margaret Hubing are:

+ 2 i. Nicholas2 Hubing, born about 1816 in Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg; died 26 August 1889 at age about 73 years, at probably, Town of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. His death is recorded in St. Mary's burial records, p 3, which gives his age at death as 73.

+ 3 ii. Anton Hubing, born 27 November 1817 at Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg; died 24 July 1899 in Monday at 5 a.m., age 81, at his daughter Anna's (Mrs. Jacob Kuiesz) home at Port Washington, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.

+ 4 iii. Michael Hubing, born 17 August 1820 at Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg; died 25 October 1890 at age 70 years, at Town of Belguim, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. His death is not recorded in Ozaukee County death records.

Generation No. 2

 2. Nicholas2 Hubing (Michael1) was born about 1816 at Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. Nicholas Hubing died 26 August 1889 at age about 73 years, at probably, Town of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. His death is recorded in St. Mary's burial records, p 3, which gives his age at death as 73.  His death is not recorded in Ozaukee County death records and there was no obituary published in the Port Washington Zeitung.  He married Margareta Dreis on 27 December 1855 in Port Washington, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  J. I. Loomis, Justice of the Peace, presided. Nicholas Stirn and Paul Ronk were witnesses to that ceremony. See Ozaukee County marriage records, v 3, no. 202. Also recorded at St. Mary's Roman Catholic church at Lake Church is the record of a Catholic ceremony on 11 February 1861.

Nicholas Hubing was about 30 years old when he migrated from Luxembourg to the United States about 1847 or 1848 with his parents and two of his brothers, Anton and Michael. The family settled in the Town of Belgium.

When the 1850 Wisconsin census was taken, the enumerator listed Nicholas in his parent's household. According to this census record, he was 32 years old, indicating that he was born in 1817 or 1818 rather than 1816. He was a farmer. See National Archive original, v 8, pp 156-157.

On 31 December 1852, Nicholas Hubing paid his brother Anton Hubing and Caecilia, his wife, $63 for 40 acres described as the West 1/2 of the West 1/2 of the Northwest 1/4 of Section 36 in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. The deed was recorded 7 January 1853 in Ozaukee County deed book I, pp 110-111. Anton Hubing had just purchased the tract on 16 September 1851 for the same price at which he sold it to Nicholas. This parcel is less than a mile west of Lake Michigan and fronts Lake Church Road at its intersection with Sandy Beach Road, just north of the Port Washington Country Club. See the plat map taken from the 1969 Trienniel Atlas and Plat Book of Ozaukee County, published by Rockford Map Publishers, Inc. of Rockford, Illinois.

We have not yet searched the records to determine when this property was sold. It may have been sold by his wife after Nicholas died. The northern 30 acres of this property is now owned by Henry Lorge.

We have not yet searched the Wisconsin censuses of 1860, 1870, or 1880 for Nicholas Hubing's household.

His gravestone in St. Mary's cemetery at Lake Church, Town of Belguim is simply inscribed:

Vater
Nicholas
Hubing

We do not know where his wife Margareta died or where she is buried. After Nicholas died, she may have moved away to live with one of her children.

Children of Nicholas and Margareta (Dreis) Hubing are:

5 i. Anton3 Hubing, born 28 August 1856 in Town of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. See Ozaukee County birth records.  Anton Hubing was baptized at St. mary's Roman Catholic church, at Lake Church, Wisconsin. His sponsors were Peter Anton Hubing and Mary Nay. See the baptism records of the church, p 43.

6 ii. Peter Hubing, born 18 December 1858 in Town of Belguim, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. See Ozaukee County birth records.  Peter Hubing was baptized at St. Mary's Roman Catholic church at Lake Church. His sponsor was Peter Schon. See the baptism records of the church.

3. Anton2 Hubing (Michael1) was born 27 November 1817 at Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. Anton Hubing died 24 July 1899 on Monday at 5 a.m., age 81 years, at his daughter Anna's (Mrs. Jacob Kuiesz) home at Port Washington, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  See Ozaukee County death records, v 3, no 401 which says he was born 28 November 1817. His gravestone inscription says he was born 27 November 1817. The county death record, an obituary and his gravestone inscription say he died 24 July 1899 but St. Mary's burial records, p 9, says he died 23 July 1899.  He married Cecelia Nëy in 1844 at, probably, the Roman Catholic church at Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. Cecelia Ney was born 02 April 1819 at Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. Cecelia (Ney) Hubing died 29 June 1900 on Friday at 11 p.m., age 81 years, at her daughter Anna's home at Port Washington.  Her death is recorded in the burial records of St. Mary's, p 10, and says she died 29 June 1900. Ozaukee County death records, v 3, no. 610, say she was born 6 April 1819, died 30 June 1900.

Anton Hubing, his wife, Cecelia, and their daughter Mary migrated from Luxembourg to the United States about 1848 with his parents and two of his brothers, Nicholas and Michael. The family settled in Town of Belgium.

In the 1850 Wisconsin census, he, his wife, and their three children were recorded in his parent's household in Town of Belgium. He was recorded as Anthony, age 30 (indicating he was born in 1819 rather than 1817), a farmer. His wife was recorded as Celia, age 31. Their three children were listed as Mary, age 5; Michael age 3, born in Wisconsin; and Catherine age 1, born in Wisconsin. According to the census record, all the other persons in the household were born in Germany. This no doubt reflected the fact that Luxembourg was then a member of the German Confederation; and although governed by the King of the Netherlands, was garrisoned by Prussia. See National Archives original, v 8, pp 156-157.

On 16 September 1851, Anton Hubing paid Paul Klapp $63 for 40 acres described as the West 1/2 of the West 1/2 of the Northwest 1/4 of Section 36 in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. The deed was recorded the same day in Ozaukee County deed book G, pp 432-433. This parcel is less than a mile west of Lake Michigan and fronts Lake Church Road at its intersection with Sandy Beach Road, just north of the Port Washington Country Club. The northern 30 acres of this property is now owned by Olive Torke and the southern 10 acres is owned by Henry Lorge. See the plat map taken from the 1969 Trienniel Atlas and Plat Book of Ozaukee Coutny, published by Rockford Map Publishers, Inc. of Rockford, Illinois.

On 31 December 1852, "Anton Hubing and Caecilia his wife" sold the 40 acre parcel to his brother Nicholas for $63. The deed was recorded 7 January 1853 in Ozaukee deed book I, pp 110-111.

Since there is no record that he brought another farm until December 1853, Anton may have moved out of Ozaukee County temporarily following this sale. On 12 December 1853, Anton paid Sebastian and Theresa Koenig $130 for 26 acres in the Northwest 1/4 of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 25 in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. The deed was recorded 16 December 1853 in Ozaukee County deed book 1, pp 443-444. This parcel is less than a half-mile from Lake Michigan and fronts Sunny Ridge Road between Sandy Beach Road and Cedar Beach Road. It is now owned by Aloysius Weyker.

When the 1870 Wisconsin census was taken, the enumerator listed Anton Hubing's household as follows:

Age Sex Occupation
Hubbing, Anton 53 M Farmer
Sicillia 51 F Keep house
Michle 23 M At home
Nicholas  17 M
Christian 12 M
Mary 10 F
Michle B. 7 M
Anna 5 F

According to this census record, their farm was worth $4,000 and their personal property was worth $600. Luxembourg is listed as the birthplace of Anton and Sicillia; and Wisconsin is listed as the birthplace of the children. Nicholas and the younger children had attended school within the past year. The Hubing's neighbors were Mary and Peter Weyker on one side and the Nicholas Mens family on the other side. See National Archives original, v 1, p 9Rev.

When the 1880 Wisconsin census was taken, the enumerator listed Anton Hubing's household as follows:

Age Sex Occupation
Anthony Hubing 63 M Farmer
Cecillia 61 F Keeping house
Mary A. 20 F At Home
Michael Hubing 18 M farming
Ann 15 F At Home

See National Archives microcopy T9, roll 1441, pp 36-37.

Since Anton and his wife Cecilia were living at Port Washington when they died, they probably disposed of their farm before 1899 but we have not yet searched the records to determine the name of the buyer. It may have been to one of their children.

Anton's obituary was published in the Port Washington Zeitung of Thursday 27 July 1899. This is a translation of the German text:

Anton Hubing

Died early Monday at 5 a.m. in the home of his son-in-law, Jacob Krier. He died after a short illness of old age. He reached the age of 81 years in November and was one of the strong energetic pioneers who in the mid 40's settled in the virgin forests and established for him and his family a pleasant homestead. He was born in Dalheim, Luxembourg and as a young man, he came with his ever helpful wife into this land. Several years ago, the pair celebrated their golden wedding. The deceased, who for some time lived with his son-in-law Krier as a retired man, is now mourned by his wife and seven children and friends. The children are:

Mrs. Mary Blücher from Athens, Wis.
Michael and Nicolaus Hubing at Granton, Wis.
Mrs. Christine Decker in Town of Belgium
Mrs. Maryanna Dreher in Milwaukee
Mike Hubing in Belgium and Mrs. Anna Krier from here.

The committal was held yesterday on the Lake Church cemetary in the Town of Belgium where his parents and two brothers are buried. Many mourned his passing. May he rest in peace.

This article also appeared in the same issue of the Port Washington Zeitung:

Among the relatives who attended the funeral of Anton Hubing was Mr. John Blicha (sic. Blücher?), a grandchild of the deceased from Athens, Marathon County, Wis.

Mr. Blicha, upon the notification of the severe illness of his grandfather travelled immediately with his wife to Port Washington with the thought that he would find his grandfather among the living. Upon coming here, he received the news that his grandfather had passed away and he also received another notification of the same nature. Two days after the first notification, he received notice in Milwaukee, Mrs. John Krecher, an Aunt of his wife, had passed away. Thus, Mr. Blicha was present within a few weeks of the funeral of three of his relatives. Grandfather Blicha of Newburg was buried on the 22nd of July, Mrs. Krecher on the 24th of July, and Mr. Anton Hubing on Wednesday the 26th of July.

The Port Washington Star did not publish an obituary of Anton Hubing.

Cecilia Hubing's obituary was published in the Port Washington Zeitung of Thursday 5 July 1900. This is a translation of the German text:

Cecilia Nëy Hubing

On Friday night at 11 o'clock, Cecilia Hubing died after a lengthy sickness in the home of her son-in-law, Jacob Krier. The deceased was born April 2, 1819 at Dalheim, Luxembourg, where in the year 1845 she was married to Antoine Hubing. In 1848, they came to America and established a homestead in the Town of Belgium. Seven years ago, they left their successful farm operation so that they could live the rest of their lives in a peaceful and pleasant surrounding. Mr. Hubing preceeded her in death by one year. Of the 10 children of the family Hubing, seven are still living who mourn the passing of their mother. They are:

Widow Maria Blücher of Athens, Wis.
Michael and Nicholas of Neilsville, Wis.
Mrs. Chas. Dreher of Milwaukee
Mrs. Christine Decker of Belgium
Michael of Belgium and Mrs. Jacob Krier from here.

Present at the funeral which took place on Monday with a great attendance were all of her children. She was buried at Lake Church cemetary in the Town of Belguim. Reverend W. B. Brücher lead the service. The deceased was a member of the Ladies Aid and Congregation since its beginning. May she rest in peace.

The Port Washington Star of Saturday 7 July 1900 also published an obituary. Some of the information in this obituary, such as the date of death and the residence of some of her children, is not consistent with the information in the Zeitung's obituary.

Magdalene Schumann was born 29 September 1833 at Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, the daughter of Philip and Johanna Schumann. She died 15 June 1908 at age 74 years, of asthma, at Town of Belguim. See Ozaukee County death records, v 5, no. 138, and her gravestone inscription.  She was buried at St. Mary's cemetery at Lake Church, Town of Belguim. Her death is recorded in the burial records of St. Mary's, which gives her age at death as 75-1/2.

Michael Hubing was about 28 years old when he migrated from Luxembourg to the United States about 1848 with his parents and two older brothers, Nicholas and Anton. The family settled in Town of Belgium.

When the 1850 Wisconsin census was taken, the enumerator listed Michael in his parents' household in Town of Belgium. According to this census record, he was 28 years old, indicating he was born in 1821 rather than 1820. He was a farmer. See National Archives original, v 8, pp 156-157.

On 21 December 1852, Michael Hubing paid Walter Lyon of Port Washington $100 as part of the purchase price for 40 acres described as the Southwest 1/4 of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 36 in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. The balance of the purchase price, amounting to $50, was due in one year at 7% interest. The deed was recorded 27 December 1852 in Ozaukee County deed book I, p 70. On 1 December 1853, Walter Lyon and Huldech E. Lyon of Port Washington gave Michael Hubing "of the same place" a deed for this property in consideration of $150. This deed was recorded on the same day in Ozaukee County deed book I, p 392.

This parcel is less than a mile west of Lake Michigan and fronts Lake Church Road at its intersection with county highway P. At the time, Michael's brother Nicolas' farm was only a quarter-mile north on Lake Church Road. Peter Poull now owns about 26 acres of this property and the Port Washington Country Club owns the balance. See the plat map taken from the 1969 Trienniel Atlas and Plat Book of Ozaukee County, published by Rockford Map Publishers, Inc. of Rockford, Illinois.

On 20 September 1854, "Michael Hubing and Magdalena his wife of the town of Belgium" sold the 40-acre parcel to Jean Greiveldinger for $490. The deed was recorded the same day in Ozaukee County deed book 3, pp 73-74.

Also on the same day, Michael paid Terence McCanville and his wife Margaret $700 for 57-1/2 acres described as the West 1/2 of the Northeast 1/4, except 22-1/2 acres on the north side of said description, of Section 11 in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. The deed was recorded 2 October 1854 in Ozaukee County deed book 3, pp 129-130.

Michael Hubing later bought additional land but we have not yet searched the records of these purchases. At the time of his death, his farm consisted of 111 acres in Town of Belgium, described as 65.5 acres in the West 1/2 of the Northeast 1/4 of Section11; 25 acres on the southwest corner of the West 1/2 of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 12; and the east 22-1/2 acres of the Northeast 1/4 of the Northeast 1/4, except two acres on the southeast corner thereof, of Section 14; all in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. This land is north of Lake Church, about two miles west of Lake Michigan and is currently part of a 392.2 acre farm owned by Wilmer J. Hubing, a grandson of Michael Hubing. See Ozaukee County Court probate file A-1384.

We have not yet searched the Wisconsin census of 1860 or 1870 for Michael Hubing's household.

When the 1880 Wisconsin census was taken, the enumerator listed Michael Hubing's houshold as follows:

Age Sex Occupation
Michael Hubing 59 M Farmer
Magdalen 46 F Keep house
Philip 24 M At home
Mary 22 F At home
Susan 17 F At home
Ann 13 F At home
Catherine 10 F At home
Nicholas 9 M

  See National Archive microcopy T9, roll 1441, p 8.

By the terms of his will, signed 23 October 1890, two days before his death, the farm was bequeathed to his wife, Magdalena.

I, Michael Hubing of the town of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, being of sound mind and memory, and mindful of the uncertainties of human life, do make, publish and declare this my last will and testament in manner following:

First - After the payments of my just debts and funeral expenses, I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Annie Hubing the sum of One Thousand Dollars and to my daughter Katy Hubing the Sum of One Thousand Dollars. Said sums to be paid them by my wife as soon as convenient after their marriage, or in case any of them should not marry, when she becomes twenty-seven years old, she may draw said sum at that age.

His death was noted in a brief obituary in the Port Washington Zeitung of 30 October 1890, as follows:

In the Town of Belgium, Michael Hubing, a settler, was called to his eternal rest on Sunday. Buried Tuesday out of Lake Church. Buried in the church cemetary. May he rest in peace.

His widow Magdalena disposed of the farm before her death in 1908 but we have not yet searched the records to determine who acquired it. It probably was her son, John Michael Hubing.

By the terms of her will, dated 26 June 1901, she divided her estate equally among her children except for John Michael Hubing who was left $1, "he having received his share of the estate before":

I Magdalena Hubing of the Town of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, being of sound mind and memory and mindful of the uncertainty of human life do hereby make my last will and testament in manner following:
