1.  JOHANNES⁴ VAN DER HEYDE (JOZEF³, JOHANNES ARNOLDI², ARNOLDUS¹) was born 25 August 1821 in Nistelrode, Province of North Brabant, Netherlands, and died 07 February 1897 in De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin. He married JOSINA MANDERS 28 July 1852 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, daughter of JUDOCUS MANDERS and THEODORA VAN ECKENDONK. She was born 13 April 1830 in Mierlo, North Brabant, Netherlands, and died 24 February 1889 in De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin.  Josina Manders was buried 25 February 1889, De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin.

Johannes Van der Heyde also known as "John Van der Heiden".

According to information provided by Loek Van der Heijden, Johannes emigrated to America in 1850, age 29, without wife or children, possibly with his brother Jacobus, who emigrated the same year.

He died on 7 February 1897, a Sunday. Johannes died of old age and complications of diseases at the home of his daughter Petronella. The funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 10, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in De Pere. He is buried at Mount Olivet cemetery there.

Mrs. Shimonik Dies at Luxemburg Today

Mrs. Veronica Shimonek, 88, widow of Stephen Shimonek, pioneer shoe dealer in Green Bay, died this morning at the home of a friend. Mrs. Michael Poet, Luxemburg. Her body was brought to the Findeisen-Greiser chapel, and funeral arrangements will be announced tomarrow. She is survived by one daughter Mary, former city school teacher, and two sons, one in Manitowoc and another in Florida. Her husband conducted a shoe store on Adams St., for many years, and they lived at the same address.

(This clipping may refer to Christina Mary Beatrice (Weiland) Shimonek, who was married to Stephen Shimonek, Jr., or it could refer to Stephen Jr.s' mother, name unknown.)

Dora H. Weiland Dies At Her Home in City

DEPERE- Miss Dora H. Weiland, a resident of DePere nearly all her life, passed away at 2 o'clock this morning in the home of her sister, Mrs. Christine Shimonek, 108 N. Broadway, after an illness of several years. Her funeral will be held Thrusday morning with a requiem mass at 9 o'clock in St. Francis' church and burial in Mt. Olivet cemetary.

Miss Weiland was born in Hilbert Jan. 12, 1877. She came here as a girl. Surviving are 2 sisters, Mrs. Anton Vanden Heuval, Bellevue, and Mrs. Christine Shimonek, and one brother, John Weiland, 733 S. Clay Street, Green Bay.

CHRISTINA MARY BEATRICE WEILAND, b. 22 February 1879, Hilbert, Calumet County, Wisconsin; d. 22 October 1961, Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.  Christina Mary Beatrice (Weiland) Shimanek is buried in John Weiland's lot in Allovez Cemetery.  She married STEPHEN J. SHIMONEK, JR., 19 October 1929, Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin; b. 08 February 1875, Kewaunee, Kewaunee County, Wisconsin; d. 13 March 1935, Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.  Stephen J. Wilhelmina was known as "Minnie".

She was born 31 January 1879 in Kaukauna, Outagamie County, Wisconsin, and died 28 January 1954 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.  She was buried at St. Ambrose Cemetery, Wabeno, Wisconsin.

Joseph was baptized 4 July 1874 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, De Pere, Wisconsin. Sponsors were Adrianne and Theodora Van der Heyden.  See church records.

Joseph attended eight years of graded school at DePere, Wisconsin. He worked maintence (Janitor) of Wabeno Schools for at least 31 years of his life. He also worked as watchman of Brown County home for first years of marriage. Worked as a fireman in sawmills in Pesthig(?) and Wabeno, Wisconsin. Along with being Janitor he was often referred to as the student counselor - he had the ability of understanding the problems of youth unusually well.

Ida had a fourth grade education. She was a housewife.

FRANCIS WILLIAM HORNE, 26 December 1934, St. Ambrose Church, Wabeno, Forest County, Wisconsin; b. 03 August 1901, Suamico, Brown County, Wisconsin.  Leona Alfreda (Van Derhyden) Horne attended Wabeno Grade School, Wabeno High School, and River Falls State Normal (teacher's college).  She worked as a teacher for 14 1/2 years, teaching Mathematics and Science in Senior High School. She then worked as a housewife.  Leona (Van Derhyden) Horne lived at Preble for 1 year, Green Bay for 1 year, Peshtigo, Wisconsin for 2 years. Moved to Wabeno 1907, graduated from High School in 1919, attended River Falls from 1919 - 1921 and seven Summer school sessions. Taught for 2 years 1921 - 1923 at Spring Valley, Wisconsin. ANONA VIROQUA ELIZABETH VAN DERHYDEN, b. 25 April 1904, Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin.  Anona Viroqua Elizabeth Van Derhyden graduated from Wabeno Normal School in 1921, and River Falls Normal in 1923. She earned a B.A. from Holy Family College in 1940, and BSLS from the College of St. Catherine in 1944. She also did graduate work at Catholic University in L.S. in the Summer of 1955.  Anona entered Holy Family Convent in 1927; Res'd into the Novitiate on June 17 (or 19), 1928; Professed in 1930. Her name in Religion was Sister Mary Josepha.  In 1967 she resided at Holy Family College, Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, 54220. She worked as Librarian at Holy Family College.  She did not marry.

On 2 September 1973 a Testimonial Dinner for Sister Mary Josepha was given. Following is a transcript of the speech given by Sister Teresita Kittell:

"It is a joy and a privilege this evening to speak to Sister Josepha's family, her fellow faculty members and her friends about some of her little publicised accomplishments in the field of conservation.

In the early days of our tenure at Holy Family College when the faculty was small, when Sister Josepha was the only librarian and I was the biology department, we got together on many a project. It was then that I found that her love of nature and of the out-of-doors dated from early childhood.

The Vander Heydensf (sic) moved to Wabeno when Anona was about five years old and she began her educational career in the first grade in that little lumbering town surrounded by all the beauty and grandeur of Wisconsin's northland.

Before the day of commercialized entertainment and before cars were common, father and mother and the entire Vander Heyden family would go to the woods for a picnic every Sunday, weather permitting, taking the baby in the carriage an the lunch in the little read wagon. the river bank, Range-line Lake--now sophisticated Lake Lucerne--the maple woods or the pine lands meant trips of fascinating interest. It was there that she learned to know and love all nature--the trees and the wildflowers, the fishes and the birds.

Her teen age years in the local high school only deepened this love and knowledge, for all their recreation was oriented to the local environment. You know the old adage, "As the twig is bent." Is it any wonder that her interest in nature and conservation is strong?

This interest was demonstrated early in our careers at Holy Family when the problem of planting trees on the badly eroded slopes in the west pasture became acute. Her enthusiastic support was contageous. Soon all the junior girls in her advisor group were lugging spades and water buckets out to the field, eagerly and energetically planting pine trees. That initial planting gradually developed into a Federally-funded Program, but Sister Josepha and her junior girls got it all started with that beginning reforestation bit.

In other ways, too, while she was director of the juniors, she stimulated in many a young student a love of nature corresponding to her own. Who can tell the good these trips around the lake accomplished in a genuine love of God's creation?

During the years many other projects were started in which she was vitally envolved, and she was, therefore, an important member of the team which won for the college the Isaac Walton Award in 1962.

The citation stresses the following points for which the award was given:
Establishment of courses in conservation and conservation education
Providing a section in the library featuring modern conservation and ecological materials
Cooperation with Conservation Education Incorporated in their workshops and other activities
Attendance by the faculty and staff at Audubon Workshops

Shall we glance at these points for a moment?

The courses in Conservation, as in all college courses, lean heavily on the library both for the choice of books and periodicals as well as for making them available to the students. Sister's energetic work in this area needs no explanation.

As for the Conservation section in the library as mentioned in the citation, it is evident that Sister carried this project through in large measure by herself.

Regarding the cooperation with Conservation Education Incorporated, she has been a member of that organization and has cooperated with all its projects.

Lastly, she is one of the faculty members mentioned as having attened the Audubon Workshops.

Then in 1964, when the college won the Award of Merit from the National Isaac Walton League of America, she was again, and for the same reasons, an important part of the team to whom credit is due.

Her general interest in conservation and nature study is well known through our area. She joined the Manitowoc Nature Study Club at its inception and was an enthusiastic member of that organization. Frequently she was invited to join with the members of the Wisconsin Ornithological Society in their annual Bird Breakfast and Bird Count and if at all possible, she never missed an Audubon Screen Tour. Her conservation and nature displays in the library showcases have been an inspiration and an enlightenment to many.

Another of her interests is the restoration and preservation of the wildflower population in Saint Joseph's Woods. Her generally hopeful attitude has been a source of encouragement in the face of numerous tragedies and failures. Now that much has been accomplished, we hope she will return when the wildflower display is at its best next spring. There are multitudes of trilliums there now on the west slope because we guarded them so fiercely; marsh marigolds in the hollow because we tried again and again to reestablish them where they had been destroyed, and finally succeeded. She has jealously watched the spread of her favorites, the spring beauties on the hillsides.

But whether her work permits her to come or not, wherever she is her love of nature will always remain with Sister Josepha for it is deep and true--an appreciation of the eternal beauty of God in His universe and may she continue to hear with Gertrude von le Fort, 'the credo of the suns, the gloria of the stars, and earth pregnant with flowers offering love's prayers.'"

She was born 07 March 1899 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, and died 17 October 1996 at age 97, at the home of her daughter Frances Ronk in Green Bay, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.  She was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Menosha, Wisconsin.  She married, second, WILLIAM NABBEFELD on 7 March 1964.  William Nabbefeld died 26 December 1977. Elizabeth Verhyen Nabbefeld, 97, of 2420 S. 18th St., Sheboygan, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 1996 at the home of her daughter in Green Bay.
Elizabeth was born March 7, 1899 in St. Paul, Minn., a daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Faricy) McQuillan.
On April 29, 1919 she married Frank Verhyen. Frank preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1951.
On March 7, 1964, Elizabeth married William Nabbefeld. He preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1977.
Elizabeth was a member of the Johnston-Blessman Post No. 38 Auxiliary of the American legion, the Harvey Pierce Post No. 2776 Auxiliary of the VFW and the Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances (Edward) Ronk, Green Bay; and Florence (William) Jacques, Ludington, Mich.; two sons, Peter (Mildred) Verhyen, Sheboygan; and Joseph "Paul" (Verona) Verhyen, Appleton; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; also surviving are three step-sons, Jerry Nabbefeld, Sheboygan; Vernon (Carol) Nabbefeld, Appleton and Bill (Pat) Nabbefeld, Shiocton. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two sisters, two brothers and two grandsons.

Nu-Roc Nursing Home has chosen Norbert "Nubs" VanDerhyden as their Resident of the Month for May 1995.

Nubs is well known in the area as he was born and raised in Wabeno. He married Edna Hoffman in 1935. Nubs and Edna lived on their farm on Highway C from 1935 until 1983 when they moved into Wabeno. They had four children and over the years were parents to seventeen foster children. They were together for 57 years before her death. Nubs is now and has always been very proud of his twenty grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren.

Nubs drove bus for the Wabeno School District for seventeen years and did custodial work for Wisconsin Public Service for ten years besides operating his farm.

    He is a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church and was also a member of the choir. He also belongs to the Wisconsin Public Service Men's Club.

It is a joy seeing Nubs on a daily basis. We are proud to have him represent Nu-Roc Nursing....
