Historical Background

This is a brief history of one branch of the Gilles family whose origins can be traced to the villages of Welschneudorf and Höhr, in the Westerwald region of West Germany.

Welschneudorf today is a small village of about 750 inhabitants, 13 miles northeast of Koblenz. Höhr lies almost midway between Welschneudorf and Koblenz.

The Reverend Charles William Gilles, O.M.I. corresponded with the Reverend J. Röhrig, pastor of the Roman Catholic parish at Höhr-Grenzhausen, Hessen-Nassau, West Germany, who sent him documents and other information about the Gilles family roots. According to the Reverend J. Röhrig, the Gilles family are descendants of a colony of French-Walloon miners whom the Archbishop of Trier imported to work in his silver mines along the Lahn river sometime after the close of the Thirty years war in 1648. Today, Walloon is a French dialect spoken in southern Belgium.

Father Gilles also corresponded with Wilhelm Gilles of Welschneudorf, who told him that he lives in the Gilles ancestral home, which has been the family seat since 1649. Herr Gilles says the family has the right to bear a coat of arms and that he is descended from a Michael Gilles, born 12 May 1715, the son of Hildegero Gilles.

Father Gilles' grandparents, John William and Maria Theresia (Kamp) Gilles, brought their four children from Höhr to the United States in 1881, through the Port of New York and shortly thereafter settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A fifth child, Helen Alice Gilles was born at Milwaukee in 1886.

Descendants of Michael Gilles

Generation No. 1

1. Michael1 Gilles married Johanna Merz.

Child of Michael and Johanna (Merz) Gilles was:

+ 2 i. Michael2 Gilles, born 27 September 1797 in Welschneudorf, Hessen-Nassau, West Germany; died 15 June 1880 at almost age 83, at Hohr, Hessen-Nassau.

Generation No. 2

2. Michael2 Gilles (Michael1) was born 27 September 1797 at Welschneudorf, Hessen-Nassau, West Germany. He died 15 June 1880, almost age 83, at Hohr, Hessen-Nassau. He married (1) Maria Anna Gobel 13 November 1826, probably at Hohr. She died, probably, at Hohr. He married (2) Margarethe Hofer  on 16 November 1829 at, probably, the Roman Catholic church at Hohr. The marriage is recorded in the marriage register of the church. She was born 30 September 1810 at Hohr, the daughter of Johann and Elizabeth (Wingender) Hofer. Margarethe (Hofer) Gilles died 27 November 1885, age 75 years, at Hohr.  Hofer is also spelled "Hover".

Welschneudorf today is a small vilage of about 750 inhabitants, 13 miles northeast of Koblenz in the Westerwald region of West Germany. Hohr lies almost midway between Welschneudorf and Koblenz. According to the Reverend J. Rohrig, pastor of the Roman Catholic church at Hohr-Grenzhausen, who sent this information to Charles William Gilles, O.M.I., the Gilles family of Welschneudorf are descendants of a colony of French-Walloon miners who were imported to work in the silver mines along the Lahn river owned by the Archbishop of Trier sometime after the the end of the Thirty Years War. Walloon is a French dialect spoken in southern Belgium.

The Reverend Gilles also corresponded with Wilhelm Gilles of Welschneudorf, who told him that he lives in the Gilles ancestral home, which has been the family seat since 1649. Herr Gilles says the family has the right to bear a coat of arms and that he is descended from a Michael Gilles, born 12 May 1715, the son of Hildegero Gilles.

Michael Gilles,  Maria Anna (Gobel) Gilles, and Margarethe (Hofer) Gilles are probably buried at the Roman Catholic cemetery at Hohr, but if so their graves are not marked.

It is not known if Michael Gilles and Maria Anna Gobel had children.

Child of Michael and Margarethe (Hofer) Gilles was:

+ 3 i. John William3 Gilles, born 30 June 1839 in Hohr, Hessen-Nassau; died 08 July 1901, age 62 years, of stomach cancer at his home at 442-22nd Avenue (now 1136 South Layton Boulevard), Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.

Generation No. 3

3. John William3 Gilles (Michael2, Michael1) was born 30 June 1839 in Hohr, Hessen-Nassau. He died 08 July 1901, age 62 years, of stomach cancer at his home at 442-22nd Avenue (now 1136 South Layton Boulevard), Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. He married Maria Theresia Kamp before 1868 at, probably, the Roman Catholic church at Hohr. The marriage is recorded in the marriage records of the church. She was born 15 August 1843 probably at Hohr. She died 30 June 1893, age almost 50 years, of black diphtheria at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

John William Gilles was born Johann Wilhelm Gilles. His birth is recorded in the baptismal records of the Roman Catholic church at Hohr.

His death is recorded in Milwaukee County death records, v 191, p 454.

According to his naturalization certificate, dated 23 March 1887, John William Gilles brought his family to the United States in 1881, through the Port of New York. See Milwaukee County naturalization petitions, v 4, p 677, no. 2468.

The family probably traveled directly to Milwaukee since he is listed in the 1882 city directory as a fireman, residing at 1324 Fond du Lac Avenue.

1883 city directory lists his occupation as cigar maker, same residence. The 1884 city directory lists his occupation as cigar manufacturer and his residence as 1627 Brown Street. He is listed in the city directories for 1885 through 1889 with the same occupation and residence.

However, in the 1890 city directory, he is listed as the operator of a grocery store on the south side of National Avenue, between 29th and 30th Avenues, with his residence at the same address. In the 1891 and 1892 city directories, he is listed as a grocer, operating a store at 1315 National Avenue, with his residence at the same address.

Although he continued to operate this grocery store at the same location, subsequent city directories list his residence as 346-28th Avenue in 1893; 315-31st Avenue in 1894 and 1895; and 442-22nd Avenue beginning in 1896. In 1927, the street names on Milwaukee's south side were changed by five blocks so that 22nd became 27th, etc.

According to the 1900 U. S. Census, John W. Gilles owned his home free and clear. He is listed as a retired grocer. His sons, Peter J. and William C., who were living at home, were listed as bookkeepers. His son, Dr. A.S. Gilles, was enumerated as a boarder in the home of John Krier, Town of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.

The 1900 Census report, which lists the month and year of birth and age of each person, does not agree with information gathered from other sources:

Name Birth Age
John W. June 1840 59
Peter J. Feb. 1867 33
William C. Oct. 1870 29
A. S. Feb. 1872 28
Theresa T. M. Feb. 1879 21
Helen A. Apr. 1887 13

Surprisingly, John W. Gilles is reported to have immigrated to the U.S. in 1865, and all his children are reported to have been born in Wisconsin. This is obviously erroneous, but one can only speculate as to the reason for it. See National Archives microcopy T623, roll 1802, v 46, enumeration district 63, sheet 16, for John W. Gilles and roll _____, v 58, enumeration district 12, sheet 11, for A. S. Gilles.

An inventory of John William Gilles' estate, dated 20 February 1902, included $72 cash on hand, a claim against the South Side Savings Bank of $2,381.44, furniture appraised at $200, the residence valued at $6,000 and another piece of real estate valued at $300. According to this inventory, the value of the savings account was "not ascertainable." The furniture included:

7 carpets
6 rugs
4 portiers
17 window draperies and shades
1 hat-rack
6 chairs, parlor
25 chairs, library, dining, sitting and bedrooms
6 tables, parlor, sitting room, etc.

25 pictures
3 bookcases
1 desk
1 chiffonier
1 sideboard
3 wardrobes
1 trunk
4 bedsteads and bedding
2 bureaus
2 refrigerators
china, crockery, etc.

The residence was described as:

"North seventy-five and 69/100 (75.69) feet of Lots numbered Thirteen (13) Fourteen (14) Fifteen (15) Sixteen (16) and Seventeen (17), in F. Steinmueller's Subdivision of Block Thirty-four (34) in Clark's Addition in the Eighth (8th) Ward of the City of Milwaukee...."

The other real estate was described as:

"Lot Twenty-four (24) in Block Two (2), National Avenue Park, in the South East Quarter of Section Thirty-six (36), Town Six (6) North of Range Twenty-one (21) East, in the County of Milwaukee..."

The probate court awarded each of his surviving children a one-fifth undivided interest in his estate. See Milwaukee County probate file 15743.
