The family history

Descendants of Daniel Slane and Nancy Ann McDonnel

Generation No. 1

1. Daniel1 Slane was born about 1738 in probably, Ireland, and died before 20 April 1795 in Sandy Ridge, Gore Township, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He married (1) Nancy Ann McDonnel about 1760 in Ireland. She was born about 1740 in probably, Ireland, and died about 1783 in probably, York County, Pennsylvania. He married (2) Anne Caudy about 1785 in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). She was born in Hampshire County, Virginia, the daughter of James Caudy, and died she 1829 in Sandy Ridge, Gore Township, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia).

We do not know the names of Daniel Slane's parents. He named his first son Hugh so Hugh might have been his father's name. Many people say it was Benjamin but they are repeating information published in a book by Maud Pugh, entitled "Capon Valley, Its Pioneers and Descendants, 1698-1940," v 2, p 289. Miss Pugh offered no evidence to support her assertion.

We do not know where in Ireland Daniel Slane resided before he emigrated to America. According to an early Irish census, the Slane family was more numerous in the area around Makeny, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland than elsewhere in the Emerald Isle so this may be the place of origin. In her book, Maud Pugh says Benjamin Slane came from County Meath, near Dublin. Some in the family point out that Slane castle is near the Hill of Tara in County Meath but the name of this castle has no known connection with the Slane family. Moreover, County Meath is in Catholic Ireland but almost all of the Irish immigrants during the Colonial Era were Protestants from Northern Ireland.

Nor, do we know when Daniel Slane came to America. In her book, Maud Pugh says that Benjamin Slane was aboard a ship that was wrecked off the coast of New Jersey and that he saved himself by clinging to some wreckage and swimming ashore. She says that this was sometime between 1700 and 1710 and that he settled first in Maryland, where his sons Benjamin, John and Daniel were born. It is an interesting story but it is probably a myth.

Finally, we do not know the name of Daniel Slane's first wife, by whom he had at least six children. Some say her name was Nancy Ann McDonnel and that they married in Ireland about 1760 and that all of their children were born there before they emigrated from Ireland. We have no evidence of this. However, we have published it in this biography in the hope that someone will either corroborate it or correct it. In any event, we assume his first wife died in York County, Pennsylvania, shortly before he moved to Hampshire County. Since his children were then very young, he probably married Ann Caudy, daughter of his new neighbor James Caudy, shortly after he arrived in Hampshire County. Unfortunately, we have not found any record of this marriage.

The earliest public record we have found is the Assessment of the Non-Associators of Rapho Township, dated 26 August 1777. According to this record, Daniel Shane, one of 13 men at the refractory, was assessed L3.10.0. The refractory was probably Baron Stiegel's glass works. This assessment record is preserved at the Lancaster County Historical Society in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The following year, the name of Daniel Slain appears among the 7th Class on a Return of Capt. Hugh Peden's Compy dated October 28th, 1778. This is for Rapho Township of Lancaster County militia. See pp 682-683 of 5th Series of Vol vii of Pennsylvania Archives. We have obtained a copy of the original document which consists of two pages of names summarizing who attended and who was absent on 12 different days ranging from April 20 to October 26 of 1778. Daniel Slain was absent most of those days although it appears that he may have attended the exercises on May 18. Moreover, Daniel's name does not appear on the Rapho township tax records for 1778 or for any other township that year, insofar as we could determine as a result of a diligent search of Lancaster County tax records.

However, his name does appear on the tax records of Newberry Township in adjoining York County for the years 1779 - 1782. In 1779, Daniel Slane was assessed L79.0.0 for two horses and two cattle. In 1780, Daniel Slain was assessed L49.0.0 for 200 acres of land, two horses and four cattle. In 1781, Daniel Slain was taxed L3.10.0 for 200 acres, three horses and four cattle. In 1782, Daniel Slain was taxed L1.10 for three horses and three cattle. He probably did not own the land on which he was assessed in 1780 and 1781. He was probably just a tenant.

He apparently migrated to Hampshire County, Virginia in 1783. On 26 June 1783, he obtained a Virginia Land Office Warrant for 170 acres, adjoining the land of James Largent. See Warrant #17749 in Deed Book W, p 110 of Virginia Land Grants at the Virginia State Library in Richmond, Virginia. This was land once owned by Lord Fairfax but confiscated by the State of Virginia at the end of the Revolutionary War.

Daniel Slane's name appears in the Hampshire County, Virginia Census of 1784. Elias Posten made the count that year and reported Daniel Slone (sic) as the head of a household consisting of eight persons, and owning a dwelling and an outbuilding.

In 1785, the Virginia personal property tax returns show Daniel Slane as a white titheable above 21 and that he owns five horses, six cattle and no slaves.

The tax returns of 1785 and subsequent years are helpful in determining when each of Daniel Slane's children reached their majority.

For example, the first of the Slane children mentioned in these returns is Hugh, who in 1785 is recorded as a white titheable under 21 with a horse and two cattle. But in 1787, Hugh Slane is reported as over 21, with two horses and five cattle. Apparently, he was born about 1765.

James Slane is first mentioned in 1786 when he is reported as a free male under 21 with one horse and two cattle. In 1787, he is reported as a white male over 21 with the same horse but three cattle. Apparently, James Slane was born in 1766.

James' brother John, who is not mentioned in the 1786 returns, is shown in the 1787 returns as a white male over 21 with two horses and four cows, indicating he was born about 1767.

Both James and John were wed in 1786 -- on the same day by the same minister! The double wedding of James Slain (sic) and Margaret Sargent (Largent) and John Slain (sic) and Phebe Hyatt was performed by the Rev. Dr. Alexander Balmain on 19 February 1786. Dr. Balmain, Chaplain of Virginia regiments in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, was the rector for 30 years after 1785 of the Episcopal Church on Loudoun Street near Boscawen street, Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia.

Two more Slane sons emerge in the record of 1794 when Benj. and Thomas Slane are reported by name as white males over 16. However, Thomas is reported as 81 in the 1850 Census of Hampshire County, Virginia which indicates he was born in 1769. Daniel Slane is reported with three white males over 16 beginning in 1791 and with two beginning in 1789.

Daniel Slane apparently owned two tracts of land. The first grant of 170 acres on the Sandy Ridge, on the waters of Great Cacapehon (Cacapon) beginning at James Largent's corner, was obtained, as mentioned above, on 26 June 1783. The second grant of 412 acres, located on Buffalo Run, a chain of the South Branch, was obtained by Daniel Saine (sic) 26 November 1789 but he may have been a squatter on this land for many years before.

Daniel Slane apparently died in 1795. His will is undated but was proved 20 April 1795. In his will, he mentions his wife Ann and six children: Thomas, Benjamin, James, John, Hugh and Jane. The executor was Evan Hiett. Witnesses were Elias Posten, James McBride, and Robert Parker. The last entry for Daniel Slane in Virginia tax records is 1794. In 1795, his wife Ann's name appears instead.

Ann Sloane's (sic) will is dated 9 November 1808 and was proved 17 August 1829. The will notes that her husband Daniel is deceased. She gives her son Benjamin the property which her husband left her. The executor was Benjamin. John Slane and Dan Carmichael are sureties. The witnesses were Francis, John B. and Thomas B. White.

Daniel and Nancy Ann (McDonnel) Slane had at least six children.

Daniel and Ann (Caudy) Slane had no children.
